Welcoming a new puppy or kitten into the family is a big event! We approach our puppy/kitten visits with excitement- We look forward to meeting your new little one and getting them started right.
All new puppy/kitten visits start with a history and review of information you received from the breeder/shelter etc. We will take a good history and find out how the baby is doing at home and discuss any concerns/questions you may have. Dr. Ashley will perform a thorough examination to make sure he/she is healthy and formulate a plan for vaccinations/deworms. All puppies/kittens require multiple visits/vaccine boosters because we have to booster their immunity over several weeks (usually booster every 3 wks until they are 16 wks old). Each visit we will go over information about heartworm preventatives, flea control, housebreaking, fecals/deworms, microchipping, spay/neuter etc. All new puppy/kittens have a checklist that we review with each visit to make sure we don't forget anything with these visits or repeat information we have already discussed.
Puppies will receive a DHLPP vaccine (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, leptosporosis, parainfuenza), coronavirus vaccine, and a bordatella vaccine during their puppy visits. When the puppy is 12 wks old, they will receive a rabies vaccine. Each puppy will be dewormed at least 2 times and a fecal performed at least once to detect parasites not commonly treated with the deworming medication. Puppies will be sent home with a samples of heartworm preventative (interceptor or sentinel) and samples of frontline flea control. An examination with Dr. Ashley will be performed with the first visit and the rabies visit. Boosters inbetween are ususally scheduled with the nurses, but a doctor's exam can be added if you have any concerns or problems. All dogs need to be on heartworm preventative year round in Florida.
Kittens will receive a FVRCP vaccine (feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, chlamydia), and a feline leukemia vaccine. Rabies will be given at 12 wks. Purevax vaccines are used. Kittens are boostered and dewormed similar to puppies along with the first exam and rabies exams. A sample of frontline will be provided for all kittens. *All new kittens should be tested for feline leukemia at their first visit* We do recommend heartworm preventative for all cats.
