Surgery Hurts!

In the early days of veterinary medicine,  vets were taught in school that animals are better off to feel pain after surgery because it would enourage them to stay quiet and still.  As late as 1980,  this was considered standard operating procedure by many veterinarians, and unfortunately there are still some practices that believe this.

Current veterinary practice requires that we manage our patients pain as if it were our own.  Studies show that pets heal faster when they are provided good pain control after surgery.    Just because our patients do not complain,  does not mean that they are not hurting.   Dogs and cats suffer in silence-  it is our job to make sure your pet is pain free!

Cordova Animal Medical Center is always evaluating our pain management protocols to provide our surgery patients the best care.  We give pain medications before surgery to ensure the drugs have an opportunity to work before the pet wakes up from surgery.    Post op patients are given pain meds preemptively (before they start hurting).   Our surgery patients ALWAYS go home with pain medications.   Pain medication is not optional!

If you have any questions about your pet's pain medication or have concerns that their pain is not being controlled adequately post op,  please immediately contact the office.
